Rather than considering it as an update to the frankly abysmal 75-300mm IS, it might be more appropriate to think of it as a properly made 100-300mm L - but wider, faster, cheaper, IS-kitted and even optically superior - to all intents and purposes it has no CA.

For me the new EF70-300/4-5.6 IS fits the bill as an ideal "walking around" lens for nature, travel and sports photographers. It's small enough and light enough to carry around as part of a kit (it would pair well with an EF-S 17-85/3.5-5.6 USM) and the image quality and stabilization are improved enough over the old lens to justify its additional cost.

The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens has very good center sharpness wide open at the wide end. Center sharpness decreases slightly as the focal length is increased to its weakest at 300mm. The lens is soft beyond 200mm. Stopping down improves sharpness somewhat but it is still weakest at 300mm.
