The Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 USM L II is one of the little wonders in the Canon lens lineup - at least on an APS-C DSLR. The center performance is nothing short of breathtaking and the borders are only slightly weaker. There's a bit of vignetting at f/1.2 but from a field perspective it's probably not a real issue and from f/2 onwards it's not relevant anymore.

This grapefruit-sized behemoth is a very special purpose lens designed for people who intend to use it wide open most of the time, and are willing to pay for that in many ways. You people know who you are. If you have to ask, then this lens isn't for you. If you know who you are and think you need one of these, go get one today. Its optics are extraordinary, even wide open.

The [85mm f/1.2 L] lens was redesigned early in 2006 and now carries a "II" designation. The earlier version of the lens was a very high quality optic, but the new version, at a slightly increased price, offers improved autofocus speed and transmits focus distance information to the camera, increasing the accuracy of flash exposure.

I could have given this review the title, "In Praise of the EF 85mm f/1.8 Lens." It does almost everything that the EF 85mm f/1.2 L does faster, cheaper, lighter and smaller. There are a few notable exceptions.

As well as the portraiture that it is primarily designed for, the lens is likely to find favour in other disciplines as well, such as indoor sports, Gig and event photographers and anyone wanting to photograph the proverbial ‘black cat in a coal cellar’ too! A specialised lens that is very, nay, exceptionally good at its job.
